NORTH KINGSTOWN – BankNewport has marked a first in their company by opening a branch on the west side of Narragansett Bay.

Located across from the new Stop & Shop on Ten Rod Road, the bank celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday.

“BankNewport is proud to join the North Kingstown community as a business partner and a good neighbor. We have enjoyed the warm welcome extended to us by the town and we look forward to serving customers in the West Bay area,” said President and CEO of BankNewport Thomas Kelly.

BankNewport has 11 branches including the new one in North Kingstown. Other branches are located in Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Tiverton, Portsmouth, Stonebridge, Middletown, Jamestown, Newport and Wellington Square. BankNewport was founded in 1819 and currently holds $1 billion in assets in the branches, according to their Web site.

“We’re excited to be able to fulfill the banking needs of North Kingstown residents. We’re also proud to become active in the community,” said Kelly.

Shortly after the ceremony a North Kingstown woman went to the branch to pay her mortgage. She prefers paying in person and until now has traveled over the bridges to pay it. She told employees she is pleased to be making a shorter trip.

“We’ve been looking into this location for the last five years. Picking a location is very critical. There are a lot of things that need to be looked at. But we’re confident in this branch and delighted to do business. Especially when the new Starbucks opens up next door,” laughed Robert Maddock, executive vice president of community banking.

BankNewport offers residents personal and commercial banking and mortgage services. Commercial banking customers can utilize checking, savings and lending. Personal banking includes regular, sterling and platinum checking and money market savings accounts. The bank’s consumer lending services offers customers home equity loans, lines of credit, home improvement loans, personal loans, auto loans and safe deposit boxes.

“We look forward to our pivotal role in the community as we expand into the West Bay,” said Sandra Patti, BankNewport executive vice president and CEO. For more information call 267-0126 visit wwww.banknewport.com
