Vault door seals foundation for BankNewport’s branch July 10, 2007 Providence Journal By Paul Grimaldi, Journal Staff Writer Workers building an office for BankNewport yesterday began assembling a vault for a branch office at a shopping center along Route 4 in North Kingstown. BankNewport, which operates nearly a dozen branches in Newport and Bristol counties, this year expanded to the west side of Narragansett Bay. The bank has a mortgage office in South Kingstown, began building the branch on Ten Rod Road and has submitted plans to open a branch in Narragansett. Since 1995, the bank had been providing residential and commercial loans to Kent and Washington counties from its offices across the Bay. Just like many of its competitors, the bank is trying to capitalize on the steady population growth in the southwestern part of the state. Workers from VTC Construction Corp., of Gilbert, Ariz., moved a 32,000-pound vault door into place yesterday onto a concrete slab that will form the office floor. With the door in place, the vault and office can be built around it. The branch, located in the Stop & Shop plaza, is scheduled to open in the fall. It’s the latest business to open on the expanding commercial strip anchored by Stop & Shop.
