Get your message across online

April 18, 2008

Your website is a primary source of information for your prospects, customers and referral sources. That's why writing for the web is such a critical skill - the words and writing style you choose must grab and hold readers of varying needs, while effectively delivering your message. Speak to everyone and anyone.

You are writing for many different audiences, and your writing must meet the needs of all of them. Be honest, straightforward, and conversational. Most of all, avoid jargon.

Capture their attention quickly.

People tend to scan web content - often spending only a few seconds before making a decision to stay or go.

Make sure your content is compelling, easy to read, and benefit-oriented.

Make your content 'scan-able.' Make sure your readers can find the information they need. Present your content in "chunks," using headlines, bullets, numbering, and lots of white space.

Don't let your readers get lost.

Visitors jump from page to page and do not read in sequence. Use clear language and headlines so users understand where they are and where to go next.
