Copywriting 101

April 25, 2008

When you only have seconds to get your message across, you need to write clear and concise copy that is strong, strategic, and prompts action. This is often a daunting task…but when done right, will resonate with your target audience and generate great responses.

Here are a few tips for writing great, effective copy:

  • Get inspired. Check out copy you think really works, and come up with ideas for how you’ll word your own key messages.
  • Be strategic. Determine the key messages that will achieve your objectives and communicate your unique selling proposition.
  • Make a point. Write something worth reading. Turn your key messages into engaging copy, and remember that specifics outweigh generalizations.
  • Be concise. Balance your word economy and get rid of any unproductive phrases or over-descriptions.
  • Be targeted. Write in the appropriate tone and style for your audience and in the voice of your company.
  • Write in layman’s terms. Remember that not all of you readers are familiar with your company’s and industry’s jargon.
  • Be consistent. Make sure your tone and style is the same across all of your marketing materials.
  • Don’t go at it alone. Ask your team for input. Take it into consideration and revise the copy as needed.
  • Forget about it for a while. Take a break and come back with a fresh set of eyes. Perfecting copy takes time and often several rounds of edits.
