Newport County Chamber of Commerce recognizes Excellence in Business

WOMEN- OR MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESS AWARD: North Star Marketing

 

With award-winning marketing tools and a client base that has grown steadily through the economic twists and turns of the past decade, North Star Marketing has become one of Rhode Island’s leading marketing firms. But what really sets it apart is the fact that in an industry in which business owners, presidents and CEOs predominantly are male, it is run and operated by women. Newport Award

 

In the past four years, North Kingstown-based North Star has nearly doubled in size. The firm recently brought on a new junior account executive to manage its substantial growth, and is looking to expand further with the addition of a public relations specialists.

 

Owner and marketing visionary April Williams regularly is invited to speak at business functions, universities and marketing forums, including the Bryant Women’s Summit and for the University of Rhode Island public relations and at a Newport County Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business Luncheon. She was a keynote speaker at the National Work and Family Seminar in Providence and most recently presented at the Brown Forum for Enterprise.

 

North Star also helps to empower young women by teaching htem about business. The company recently invited a local Girl Scout troop to its offices to earn a “My Own Business” merit. Williams is one of the founders of the Power Up program, which helps women realize the dream of owning a business, and North Star also contributes to the Center for Women in Enterprise in Rhode Island.

 

Williams attributes her company’s success to her unique approach to running a business. North Star operates on the principles that no one person is as effective as the team, that businesses must not be afraid of change, and that if you are not having fun while doing good work, you’ve missed the boat.
