Get the word out

October 31, 2008

One of the key components of a successful event is your audience. It's essential to identify your ideal audience during the planning process and work to get the word out. Promoting your event will not only get your guests in the door, but will also generate awareness for your company, product, service, or cause.

Compass103108Post the event on your website. Make a landing page for interested attendees and media to learn more about the occasion and its purpose. Also, provide an online form for guests to submit to register for the event.

Utilize your existing collateral. Use the materials in your marketing arsenal to raise awareness. Send invitations via direct mail or email to your desired attendees (it's also nice to create a formal invitation if it's within your budget). Be sure to provide a link to your website or landing page and encourage recipients to learn more and register.

Generate media interest. Contact the media to garner press coverage and gain the attention of the community. Create a well written press release with details of the event to distribute to your media contacts, and be sure to follow up.

Advertise where it makes sense. If your event is open to the public, advertise in appropriate media outlets, such as trade magazines, business journals, radio programs, local papers and chamber of commerce publications. Direct people to your website and encourage them to register for the event.
