Your Subject Line Affects Your Bottom Line

July 17, 2009

How do you get readers to open your email? The secret can be a great subject line. Here are some tips to increase your open rate:
  • SPAMTo the Point - Messages with subject lines of fewer than 35 characters have open rates that are over 4.5% higher than those with over 35 characters.
  • Watch Spam Triggers - Some words directly trigger spam filters. Others just "sound" like spam and will cause your readers to assume your email is junk.
  • Test Multiple Subjects - Test different subject lines to learn what works for your readers. Sometimes a hard sell is the most effective way to reach your audience, while other times aggressive sales language is not effective. Aim for at least 300 addresses in each test group for your results to be statistically valid.
